R&D tax relief is available for projects that aim to achieve an advance in science or technology. This can include developing new products, processes, or services; or improving existing ones. The project must involve overcoming scientific or technological uncertainties—routine work or minor improvements do not qualify.
The merged scheme applies to accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2024. Under this scheme, companies can claim a taxable credit worth 20% of qualifying R&D expenditure, resulting in a net benefit of between 14.7% and 16.2%, depending on the company’s tax position.
For accounting periods beginning before this date, either the SME or RDEC scheme will apply, depending on the size and status of the company.

Payments to subcontractors or external specialists (subject to limitations).
